A few days ago I wrote an article on the 5 actors who I liked but wished would do more work that showed that they could act or entertain. Now I want to look at the actors/actresses that have just been “on” lately.
Brad Pitt has been a superstar for a very long time but it seems like for the last few years he has just been shooting out gold from every part of his body. I mean look at his last five movies: Burn After Reading, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds, Megamind, and The Tree of Life. Granted Megamind isn’t gold but it’s not bad and it gets a past when you have Oscars from Benjamin Button and Inglorious Basterds and most likely The Tree of Life will be nominated. His next projects include Happy Feet 2, Moneyball, and World War Z so it looks like the gold will keep pumping from Pitt. My favorite performance from him out of his last five movies has to be The Tree of Life though. I mean I loved him in Benjamin Button and Inglorious Basterds but there was just something about his character in The Tree of Life that was just mesmerizing and amazing and his performance just seemed so flawless and keeps you just wanting to know more as to why he acted that way. Brad Pitt certainly will not stop soon though with the great movies.
Not only is this guy one of the coolest men in the world but he also is probably one of the best actors in the world. It’s not just his coolness that makes him such a great actor but it’s also his hilarious parody that he can play when being an over the top character (i.e. O Brother Where Art Thou and The Men Who Stare At Goats) as well as a slick almost Bond like man in everything else. I feel like he has been nonstop since Up in the Air. After that he was in The Men Who Stare At Goats, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The American, and is coming out in The Descendants and The Ides of March. He is outstanding in each of those movies and while The American and The Men Who Stare At Goats as well as Fantastic Mr. Fox aren’t the most mainstream movies, Clooney still gives fantastic performances in them and they should grab your attention and should be given a chance because they contain some Clooney gold as well as underrated entertainment.
She isn’t the most widely known actress and is generally known as Mal in Inception but get ready because Cotillard is about to be a high demand actress in Hollywood in the coming years. She hit the scene in the Oscar winning movie, La Vie en Rose, a French film that won Best Foreign film. Her other credentials of late include Public Enemies, Nine, Midnight in Paris, and the incoming movies Contagion and The Dark Knight Rises. She has easily stolen the show in each of the movies that she has been in and even though she is usually cast in a semi-small role she seems to grab the attention of the audience by playing a both intriguing and sexy character that usually intrigues the lead male actor as well. My favorite Cotillard role is a tie between Inception and Midnight in Paris. In Inception, she played great with Leo DiCaprio as well as gave a bewildering performance as his deceased and somewhat deranged wife. In Midnight in Paris, she had great chemistry with Owen Wilson and was probably one of the best characters in the giant ensemble cast work. Cotillard will continue to become big and will be one of the in demand actresses if she isn’t already.
Matt Damon really has been flawless his whole acting career but lately he has just been throwing out some great work. He has some great comedic chops as seen in The Informant and a guest stint on 30 Rock, action muscles in Green Zone and the Bourne trilogy, and a dramatic side in True Grit, Invictus, and Good Will Hunting. His work of late has been stellar and he has garnered some Oscar buzz with Invictus and True Grit but has also been giving us some fun. My favorite Matt Damon role is still Jason Bourne but if I had to give my favorite role since then I would have to say Invictus. He gave probably one of his most dramatic performances and held his own with Morgan Freeman but he also made me interested in both rugby and South Africa. His next projects include Contagion and We Bought a Zoo which both a getting some great early buzz so this isn’t the end of strong Matt Damon movies and I really don’t see an end in sight. Heck I’ve heard he wants to direct too!
I want even throw in an intro for him look at his latest work: The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York, The Departed, Shutter Island, Revolutionary Road, and Inception. Leo is the bomb. Not only that but he also is leading in upcoming movies such as J. Edgar, The Great Gatsby, and Quentin Tarentino’s Django Unchained, so clearly he isn’t stopping! I know he is mainly known for his role in Titanic or maybe even now Inception but I think the best Leo DiCaprio role is in The Departed where he plays a very interesting character who is working with the mob and Jack Nicholson trying to frame him and get him in jail for the Boston police. He gives a strong performance and holds his own against the likes of Nicholson, Ray Winstone, Alec Baldwin, and Mark Wahlberg who all decide to scream at him throughout the movie. Leo won’t stop being awesome and it’s no question why he is on this list.
