These actors/actresses have been very successful of late in their latest movies and have gained recognition for their work. They are not as known outside the movie community as they deserve and I think once they get that one mega-hit they will be in line for A list status.
Jeremy Renner hit the big time with his turn as Sergeant First Class William James in the Best Picture winner from 2008 The Hurt Locker. He followed that up with The Town which gained him another nomination for Best Supporting Actor (actually he was nominated for Best Lead Actor for Hurt Locker). He has a lot of “fun” projects lined up now which include the latest Mission Impossible movie but the role that I think will make him a superstar will be his taking over for Matt Damon in the newest installment in the Bourne trilogy. The Bourne Legacy is coming out in 2012, he will also appear as Hawkeye in The Avengers but I think he will star more in the Bourne role that made Matt Damon a superstar.
Alright hear me out on this one. I know Jon Hamm is already extremely famous for Mad Men but that’s TV, movie-wise he hasn’t done anything that amazing. His best role was probably in The Town where he played a detective who was trying to track down Ben Affleck’s gang of thieves. His other credntials include Sucker Punch, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Shrek Forever After so yeah he needs that big role. He doesn’t necessarily have anything lined up other than the comedy Friends with Kids which also stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Megan Fox, and Adam Scott. I’d like to see him do something dramatic as well as large. I could see him in a Martin Scorsese movie and that actually sounds really awesome now that I stir on it.
Tom Hardy broke onto the Hollywood frontier with his role as Eames in Inception. This role made Tom Hardy a mainstream name even though he has been in relatively large British movies such as RocknRolla and Layer Cake. He is starting to take the perks of being one of the hottest names on the acting circuit by grabbing some roles that should make him a stand alone star. It starts with his role in the movie Warrior which stars him as a MMA fighter who has just came home from war. The early reviews are positive and this should be a stepping stone to his part in next year mega-movie The Dark Knight Rises where he reunites with Christopher Nolan to play Bane. Being in a Nolan Batman movie does wonders for star power (just ask Christian Bale) and should make Hardy a star.
Zoe Saldana was first seen as a pirate on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl where she gave Johnny Depp a tough time while he tried to recover his stolen ship. She hit the mainstream with her performance as Uhura in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek in 2009 and later became in demand after playing Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar now that role made her a superstar I guess but she hasn’t had that solo role that really laminates her as one. Her latest flick, Colombiana, tried to capture that but reviews said no. She will be appearing in the the sequel to Star Trek in the next few years and I’m hoping she can find a movie after that that will let her command the film and show off why she is just a awesome and kick-ass person.
Elizabeth Banks has had a slew of supporting roles that have made her a very likeable actress in Hollywood. Her credits include 40 Year Old Virgin, The Next Three Days, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Role Model. Yes most of those are comedies but she is taking a stab at the dramatic side in The Hunger Games next year. Banks plays a supporting role again in that but I think if she can do it as well as she usually does and with how big that movie will be it could catapult her into grabbing some larger solo roles where she can really showcase her talent. She also will be in the large comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting which will let her show off her great comedic chops yet again. She continues to be a comedy giant but I really want to see her as a solo force.
